John McCarthy was born September 4th, 1927, and died October 24, 2011. He received his bachelor's degree in mathematics at the California Institute of Technology and his master's from Princeton. He was also a professor at Dartmouth, MIT, and Stanford, where he created the SAIL (Stanford Artificial Intelligence Lab) program. Known as the father of AI, he created the term "artificial intelligence" and created the LISP programming language that is used among developers of AI, winning many awards. Finally, McCarthy also developed time-sharing and played a role in developing Elephant 2000.
